EHH Group is a food manufacturer from Port Klang. They make yellow noodles, laksa, koay teow and tofu under brands like Cap Kunci, Noble Noodle and Key. In January, their team came to us for a gift bag: green, EHH logo in front, and good enough that people would keep using it. We delivered in June, and it is still the bag they designed: same size, same green, same logo in front. A drawing and a real bag are not the same thing, though. A few details on paper could not be made exactly as drawn, so we adjusted them to what works in actual production, over two rounds of mockups.
The Challenge 🎯
EHH came with a clear idea: a gift bag with a zip on top, 30 cm wide, 20 cm tall and 13 cm deep, in their brand green, with off-white handles and the EHH logo in front. A brief this detailed makes our job easier. It also means the client knows exactly what they want, so every small detail will get checked.
The tricky part is that one adjustment leads to another. Change the canvas colour, and you have to check whether the white logo still stands out. Change the handle colour, and you have to see if it still goes with the logo. Change the closure, and the top of the bag has to be sewn differently. So you cannot approve everything in one go. You settle one thing, then check the next.
A gift bag also gets judged fast. People pick it up, open it and put it down. If it slouches or the top keeps falling open, that is what they remember about the brand.
What We Did 🧵
We went through two rounds of mockups between January and March, sorting out one thing at a time. Fabric came first. EHH compared canvas samples by hand, and we checked the green against their Pantone 2427 C in daylight, not on a laptop screen.
Next was the closure. The drawing showed a zip across the top. In actual production we went with a magnetic snap on an inner band instead, so the front of the bag stays clean and the top still holds shut. A zip closes the bag fully, but it is slower to open and adds more stitching around the mouth of the bag. A magnetic snap just clicks shut and opens with one pull. Which one is better really depends on what goes inside and how people will use the bag. We sent EHH photos of two snap sizes side by side so they could pick the one that fits the band properly.
The handles ended up in red cotton webbing, which ties in with the red under the EHH logo. The logo is silkscreen printed in two colours, white and red, and we checked both on the real green canvas, not just on the mockup. A white that looks sharp on screen can turn a bit greyish on dark fabric. EHH approved the second mockup in mid-March, and only then did we start the bulk run.
The Result ✅
The bags were delivered in June: green canvas, red handles, the EHH logo silkscreened in white and red, and a magnetic snap hidden inside. Put one next to the January drawing and you can see it is the same bag, just made for real. They stand on their own, close easily, and keep the brand colours all the way through.
Five months for one bag sounds long, right? Truth is, very little of that time was sewing. Most of it was deciding: choose, check, adjust, check again. That is normal for a fully custom-made bag. So if your bag is for an event with a fixed date, start talking to your supplier three to four months before.
Planning your own custom bag? Think about two things first. What will you put inside? That decides the size and the type of opening. How will people use it? If they need to open it quickly, a magnetic snap works well; if everything must stay fully covered, go for a zip. Also ask your supplier to plan the sampling time and the bulk production time separately, so the delivery date they give you is one you can really count on.
